well firstly we decided what colors for our background would match our front cover  and we dicIded to choose red and black . we then decided to choose what topics would be in our magazine and listed appropriate topics that would interest our readers such as top 10 RNB tracks and worst/best dressed RNB artists, we also put them in to different catogeries under headings so that we broke it down in to different sections. We then uploaded three images to match with topics that were listed o make the magazine look realistic , we only used three pictures because we didn't want the page to look overcrowded. we added to little pictures on the side of the title which were two speakers to add to the RNB music theme.

we decided that sevda would go home and upload an image that we all liked, so when she  came in to lesson the image was already uploaded and we started to edit it. We started to fill in the magazine with the main title and subheadings about celebrities and hot topics that would interest our audience. we also decided on what other pictures we would use to catch our readers eye. we then chose a suitable font and started to experiment with colours so that they would suit the main picture and the main title. We used different shapes for example (star) so that the price would stand out and appeal to the reader. we also added a bright banner and a bar code to attract our readers and make or magazine look realistic.

Magazine Evaluation

We had to analyse music magazine covers in out groups in lesson and then had put together some ideas to make our own magazine cover and inside page. We carefully analysed a Hip hop magazine cover and decided for our magazine genre to be RnB. This because we had a lot of gossip and ideas about this genre which we thought could help us rather than making a magazine cover about artists we do not know.
We kept some of the features looking the same to the Hip hop magazine but converted it into RnB, using RnB artists, pictures and quotes. We choose our colours carefully and used bold unisex and attractive colours such as yellow, red and blue, black and white. We used a mixture of font for our text to stand out on the pictures and also for the magazine to look aimed at both men and women.
Our magazine cover yes, does challenge some conventions of music magazines as it has sub genres such as celebrity news, the fashion. We have used our own picture for our magazine, however most RnB magazines have artists representing the magazine cover. Magazines are mostly crowded with lots of sub genres and ideas which you would not find in our magazine cover, we have organized our magazine inside page for it to look more attractive and organized. This is so our magazine looks more unique in its own context. We have still made it suitable for our RnB lover readers with fun, attractive looking headlines.
For our magazine cover we used a font called Hobo std, we used this font for the sub headings with the bold and underline tool selected at size 24pt. For all of our information we used the same font Hobo std but at size 18pt, we also added a web address, issue number and date with Hobo at size 18. We inserted a banner at size 18.36pt with also Hobo std. We also used picture captions and with Hobo std again at size 19pt. For our contents page the titles were size 62 with the font Syncro let, the sub headings were also Syncro at size 24pt. our numberings and information are Century Gothic size 17pt with our picture captions at size 14 pt with the Century Gothic font. We made the important texts larger and additional information smaller to save space on the page.
My music magazine represents a certain social group, the group it represents are young artists who are interested in RnB, alongside people who are inspired to be involved in the RnB industry. I think I would choose EMAP to publish my magazine as they have already top selling magazines. I feel my magazine can gain EMAP many more customers as I find my magazine interesting, attracting and also appealing. My magazine would be sold at only specialised music stores because it is a specialist magazine with unique contexts.
The audience for my music magazine cover are both men and women who are interested in music. They are aged between 15-30 and probably teenagers to working class people possibly involved with music. I tried to attract this audience by making my magazine look young and Rnbish my inserting suitable images with also headlines of new young artists, bright colours were used to make the magazine look attractive and eye catching.
I have been using photo shop for more than 1 year now which I enjoy using usually every week, but the photo shop we learnt to use is very different to the one I use. I learnt to cut areas out of the picture which we did not want. I also learnt how to use the custom shape tool to make boxes and the stars on the magazine cover. I knew how to use the crop tool, for the contents page we used the gradient tool which we used to make the background look more attractive and different.
Our photo shoot day was not how we expected it to be, we got a couple of pictures which were very useful to use but most of out pictures were for a waste, we took a picture of one of our friends called Miles which had dressed up looking like a celebrity which he looked a bit like Usher, so we took a picture of Miles and used it for our sub topic “RnB celebrity Make overs” we also took pictures of another friend which was wearing a big long gold chain with big DJ headphones which looks like a RnB fan. We used his picture our out other topic “youths in studios” as we thought we could attract young readers who would want to know about studios and their own recordings made in studios. We then went outside of college and asked local people who might look like celebrities if we could take pictures of them for our media coursework.
If I had another chance to do my magazine cover and contents page again, I would add more Rnb looking pictures and lay the page out in some sort of unique way. I would experiment with a lot of font and choose which one is the best that looks Rnbish, bold, young and live. I would use larger ranges of colour and change the way we have set out our contents page. I would not space it out like a poem going from top to bottom and not use the gradient tool for a background. I would research some backgrounds which are shaped in stereos and DJ decks and use a picture like that to complete my background. I really like the speakers we have included on the top of the contents page. We also added a banner at the end but the printer was cutting off the banner, we made sure the page was size A4 but it kept repeating even after 3 times of printing it out. We have had no problems in our magazine making which our only problem was the printing which we could not solve.

Magazine Inside page

6th octorber:
in todays lesson we added our final touches to our magazine cover and started to figure out what colours to use for our inside page. we started by thinking about some sub titles to place our information under, we completed our inside cover page, we also had some problems which i would talk about in my evaluation.

Magazine Evaluation

Magazine Evaluation
Can Gizem Arik

For our AS media coursework, we had to analyse music magazine covers and make our own in groups. We decided to make the genre of our magazine RnB music. We wanted to do this genre because it is currently very popular and interesting with all the new artists e.g. Rhianna and Chris Brown.

We tried to keep some conventions the same to make the genre obvious (e.g. pictures of RnB artists) and we kept the conventions that make the magazine image successful (catchy captions e.g. “Who was Chris Brown spotted with?”). We also used colours that are bold/vibrant and unisex (red/blue/yellow/black/white) for the text to stand out and for it to be appealing to both men and women.

Our magazine does challenge some conventions of music magazines as it also has sub genres such as fashion and celebrity news. Also, on RnB magazine covers, people would usually expect to see someone really famous, but my group and I decided to use an image of me so that the audience can somehow relate to an average person trying to get successful.

We also challenged some conventions of a music magazine by changing the layout. Music magazines often have messy, relaxed looking layouts but the layout for our contents page is more organised. We decided to do this because it makes it seem more important and less cheap. We still tried to make it look suitable for our target audience by giving the headings a young, fun font called Synchro Let and we gave them bright colours. The list of the contents is a different font called Century Gothic. We decided to use this font to make the page seem clear and not too cluttered. We also gave the images captions so that they don’t seem too bland. For the front cover, the main font I used is Hobo Std because it looks young and bubbly. I varied the font sizes. For example, I made the important things bigger and additional information smaller to save space on the page.

My music magazine represents a certain social group. The group it represents is artists who are interested in RnB music or just normal people who aspire to be involved in the RnB music industry. The industry that I think would publish my music magazine is probably Emap. This is because they have many music magazines already such as Q and Kerrang. Even though they are not RnB magazines, I think my magazine will fit in as it is modern, interesting and appealing to many different audiences. It can gain Emap many more consumers.

The audience for my music magazine cover are both men and women who are interested in RnB music. They are aged between 16-24. They are probably working class people or students (possibly studying music and media). I tried to attract this audience by making the magazine look young with images and headlines of young artists. I also used bright colours to make it look funky and eye-catching.

I have learned how to use photoshop during the making of this magazine cover. For example, I learned how to edit photos and how to change fonts/texts to make them look more interesting. I learned how to use the custom shape tool to make the stars and boxes. I also used the crop tool to cut out the parts I didn’t want in the image. For the contents page, we used the gradient tool to make the background look more attractive.

If I had a chance to do a new magazine cover and contents page, I would add in more headlines and features to make the magazine more interesting. I would still make it spacious by making the font size smaller but I would just simply include more news and topics. I would probably change a couple of other things as well. For example, I would make the font of the sub headings more eye-catching by using a variety of fonts. Another thing I would change is the main image shot. I would probably make it a mid shot or long shot to have more space to add text to the front cover. Something I do like about my front cover is the colour theme we decided to use. This is because they are all strong colours that go well together. It gives the magazine an edge. On my contents page, I like the beat box stereos placed on the sides of the page heading. This is because they connote music and they are usually used by RnB audiences. I also think it fits in well with the background colour and makes the page more attractive.

On photoshoot day, me and my group went around our college taking pictures of each other that we can include in our magazine production. We tried to take pictures against contrasting backgrounds (e.g. if I was wearing a brown top, we would take the picture against a black or white wall). We took a picture of our friend who had dressed up to look like a celebrity for the project and we used this picture as a topic for “RnB Celeb Makeovers”. We also took a picture of a friend wearing headphones and a gold chain and hat who looks like a stereotypical RnB fan. We used his picture for a topic called “Youths In The Studio” as we thought it could appeal to younger readers who want to record their own songs. Then, we went outside and asked local people (who look like celebrities) if we could take their pictures (e.g. a Gwen Stefani look-a-like sitting at the bus stop with her friend that we included as a feature on our front cover).

We added in a banner at the bottom of the magazine front cover but it wouldn’t print out and the right side of the page was cut off. We made sure the page was set to A4 but it wouldn’t work even though we printed it out like 3 times. That was the only problem we couldn’t resolve during our project.

Developing The Magazine Front Cover and Contents Page

6th October:
Today, we looked at the ideas Sevda came up with after I sent a picture of myself to her that we can use on the front cover so we don't lose marks. We kept the magazine title the same (RnB Soul: red and blue outlines on large, white, bold font). We talked about how we should do the main features of the magazine (e.g. price, main story, graphics) and we tried out many different ideas until we decided on the best ones. We tried out different fonts and colours for the headlines and we thought it would be best to keep to a colour theme of red, blue and yellow. They stand out from the background and are very vibrant and bold colours. We inserted extra images(small) to make the front cover seem more interesting and eye-catching. We also started creating the contents page. We tried to keep a continuous theme from the front cover with the colours red and yellow. We added in images to make the page more eye-catching and we used a bubbly font to make it seem more fun and young.

Developing the magazine cover

6th October:
Over the weekend I edited the photo Gizem sent me, and started with the title. In today’s lesson I showed them the cover I had started and we all agreed to use the cover I started. Today we edited out magazine cover and extended its quality by adding all the photos and text we had decided on. We had decided for our magazine to be £2.00 which is very clear on our magazine cover. We included a banner, bar code, issue date, website and everything you would see on a magazine. I think out magazine looks very pretty and attracting with the blend in colours and layouts. We have completed our magazine cover, but we might have slight changes (maybe).

Starting the magazine cover

2nd October:
After the Photoshop intro, we had to begin creating our magazine front cover. We decided to use one of out own pictures that we took, so we do not loose marks for out project. Out first experiment didn’t go well as there was something with the pixels so we had to use an existing image from the internet, and we saw that it didn’t work for the image we collected from the internet. We took up most of our time trying to make everything go well, unfortunately it never so we were working on the colour schemes and planned. We decided for me to get a picture off Gizem and to try at home using my own photoshop.

Photoshoot day

29th september:
on the 29th we were givin cameras to go around and take pictures that we can include in our magazine. Before this we were taught how to use the camera and what colours work well with different backgrounds. Me and my group went to the libary and thought about a topic in the magazine to include which was, how teenagers and young people do not find education important and waste thier life and time on streets and gangs. We also took a picture of a shopkeeper selling cigarettes to an underage person which was acted out. We then walked around and asked random people who look like RnB celebrities and asked if we can take their pictures for our media project. We also took a couple of pictures of ourselves to make it a topic for the magazine called "Youths Trying To Make it Big". Also deciding to have a subgenre on the latest RnB fashion so we took pictures of our friends who look fashionable.

Starting The Magazine Cover

2nd October:
Today, after the photoshop intro, we had to begin creating our magazine front covers on photoshop. As a group, we decided to use one of our own pictures that we took not to lose marks for our project but there was something wrong with the pixels so we had to use an existing image from the internet. Even though we spent nearly an hour trying to make it work, it wouldn't. The image we finally used was of Chris Brown. We're still going to try out other images to see if any look better. We were also working on the colour scheme of the magazine and we thought white, black and red would be appropriate and it would suit the image we are using for now.

Photoshoot Day

29th September:
On this days lesson, we had to go around in our groups taking pictures that we can include in our magazine project. Before this, we were taught about framing and how we should take the pictures. Me and my group went to the library to take pictures for a topic in the magazine about how some young people do not find education important and waste their time on the streets. We also took a picture of a shopkeeper selling cigarettes to an underaged person (acted out/fake). These issues will go into the real-life section of the magazine. We then walked around and asked random people (who look like RnB celebrities e.g Gwen Stefani) if we can take their pictures for our media project. We also took a couple of pictures of ourselves to make it a topic for the magazine called "Youths Trying To Make it Big". We also decided to have a subgenre on the latest RnB fashion so we took pictures of our friends who look fashionable.

Planning

25th September:
Afer analysing magazines on the markets, in our groups we started to plan for out own magazine. We decided for our genre to be R'n'B, we then thought of a magazine title although none came to mind so we decided to think about one individually then to share our ideas with the group. We disscused who should be the main image on the front, which who is popular on the main streets. So we decided for it to be Chris Brown. Also decided for the sub image to be Rihanna. We have not decided about the colours and styles.

Planning

25th September:
After analysing existing magazines, in our groups we had to start planning our own music magazines. We talked about what music genre the magazine will follow and we decided that it should be RnB. Then we thought about what the name of our magazine should be and decided to think about it individually at home and bring our ideas to the next lesson. We discussed who should be the main image on the front cover. We thought about who is currently very popular and decided to make the image on the front, Chris Brown. We also decided to have a sub image of Rhianna on the contents page. We still haven't decided the color scheme we're going to use as we thought it would be easier when we're actually making the front page.

magazines

We had an intro to introduction to magazines and discussed the different types and then we focused on consumer lifestyle magazines and then focused on a different sub-genre in groups. We studied Celebrity Weekly and we had to find the main image, sub headings, main title, graphics, bar code and banner.
We looked at various magazines such as Hip Hop Connection and discussed the front cover why a particular picture was chosen, colours used and what effect they had, the purpose of the magazine and who the targeted audience were for particular magazines as they varied according to what magazines they were.

Magazine Analysis

 25th September:
As a class we started analysing magazines that are on the market already. We spoke about what audiences they are aimed at and what genre they follow. then, we were put into groups to continue analysing with our groups looking at one specific magazine. We looked at "Hip Hop Connections" and decided what genre and who the audiences are. We skimmed and scanned the magazine to collect some ideas about the theme and profile. We then were told to come up with a story a day in the life of a typical reader. We finally read through practical brief and planned for out own magazine.

Magazine Analysis

25th September:
The first thing we did as a class was analyse existing magazine covers. We talked about what audiences they're aimed at and what genre they follow, the banners, the graphics, the images etc. Then, we were put into groups to continue analysing different music magazine covers. We had to discuss the connotations of the images and contents of the magazine. We also talked about the lifestyles the readers of these magazines might have. We suggested that the reader for "Hip Hop Connections" was a working class male who's aim in life is to become a rapper. We also suggested that he was probably aged around 16-20.

Photoshop tutorial

This morning we were taught how to use the basic form of photoshop. We learnt the skills such as text, cropping, overlapping pictures, using the paint fill box to experiment with different colour backgrounds. Also transposing, changing the gradient, photo manipulation, sizes of images and fonts and learnt how to use the magic wand tool. We also learnt how to add shapes to the page and how to insert more than one image to our selected page. Now we are familiar with photoshop and it will help our group in creating our magazine.

photoshop tutorial

Firstly I opened up a new document and named it.
Secondly I learnt the basics such as learning how to change fonts, playing around with pictures for example different layers, experimenting with backgrounds, cropping and putting in texts. we also learnt how to use shapes and gradient and transposed different images. I gradually came familiar with the tools and how to use them.
I am now familiar with photoshop and this will help us with future projects, this was a successful learning experience as i am now confident in using photoshop myself.

Photoshop Tutorial

At this stage of our project, we learned how to use the basic photoshop tools; text (changing font/size), cropping, photo manipulation, transposing, changing layers, changing the gradient, using the magic wand tool and experimenting with different backgrounds and colors. We also learnt how to add in extra images. We are now familiar with photoshop and it will help our group in creating the magazine.
